Combo's, Dip Pens, Fountain Pens
This category consists of all items in the collection that have multiple purposes (e.g. pencil & pen), or are dip pens, or fountain pens.
Inkwells & Ink Bottles
Ink bottles, ink wells. ink pots... A variety of shear top ink bottles, inkwells of various types, novelty ink pots & inkwells, and travel inkwells.
A mix of items in the collection that don't quite fit in any other category. Some are obviously writing related, while others are items that I simply picked up out of curiousity.
Nibs & Leads
Nibs, pens, feathers... these are a few of the names used at various times to describe what most of us think of as simply nibs. There are only a few single nibs of note in the collection; most are boxed. Early pencil "leads" were made from pieces of solid graphite.
For purposes of the collection, the "Victorian" category spans pencils dating from approx. 1816 through to about the first world war. The core of the collection are the pencils and other items made by Sampson Mordan & Co. but many other Makers from both sides of the pond are also represented.
